Bairro Bloco 9 Tchida
We worked together with Village Water on an improvement in Bairro Bloco 9 Tchida which has significantly impacted 326 people. Here are a few additional insights regarding the venture.
Each waterpoint received an individual technical assessment to determine the scale of the problem. For those requiring minimum repairs like replacement of rods, bearings or cylinders, these were often fixed the same day. For those requiring more detailed repairs including deepening of the borehole or more specialist parts, the team scheduled dates with each community to return. On average, it took 127 days between pump breakdown and our partners repairing it.
Access to safe water and sanitation are fundamental human rights, acknowledged and underpinning international development goals across gender, education and climate. Isolated short-term water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions are not sustainable and across sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that just 68% of waterpoints are working five years after installation. Commonly, there are issues around monitoring, availability of spare parts and skilled technicians.
